You spot a line of ants across the kitchen counter and reach for the vinegar. It’s one of the most popular home remedies, but it only deals with the ants you can see.
We looked at guidance from university pest experts. They don’t recommend vinegar as a way to kill ants. They use it, at most, to clean up trails. Here’s what they recommend instead.

What Vinegar Can and Can’t Do
Ants find food by following chemical trails left by other ants. Wiping a trail with vinegar and water, or soapy water, removes that scent for a while. Penn State Extension includes this as part of cleaning up indoors.
The problem is the nest. Spraying or wiping the ants you see doesn’t stop more from coming in, and the colony will keep sending ants while food and a way in remain.
💡 UC IPM’s advice for trails is even simpler: vacuum them, wipe them with soapy water, or spray them with window cleaner. You don’t need vinegar in particular.
How to Get Rid of Ants in 5 Steps
Find What They Want and Remove It
Food is usually why they came in
Follow the trail to see what they’re after. Common attractions include sugar, syrup, honey, fruit juice, grease and pet food.
- Clean up crumbs, grease and spills.
- Store food in clean, sealed containers, not plastic bags or open packets.
- Empty garbage and food bins often.
- Don’t leave pet food out.
Why this works: Penn State Extension says removing food and water gives longer-lasting control than pesticides.
Clean Up the Trails
This is where vinegar can help
Vacuum the ants, or wipe the trail with soapy water or vinegar and water. Keep cleaning new trails while the bait gets to work.
Seal the Way In
Follow the trail back to the entry point
Look under sinks, in cupboards, and along pipes and wires, because ants travel along them. Fill cracks with caulk, or plug them with petroleum jelly for a quick fix.
Fix any leaky faucets too, because ants also come in for water.
Use Ant Bait
This is what reaches the colony
Workers carry bait back to the nest and share it. You don’t need to find the nest for bait to work.
- Use enclosed, tamper-resistant bait stations, or gel bait placed in cracks.
- Place bait near trails and entry points, and don’t spray insecticide while baiting.
- Refresh bait that dries out or runs out. If the ants ignore it, move it or try a different product.
Why this works: Bait works slowly on purpose, so workers have time to take it home. Spraying stops them from getting it there.
Pro tip: Ants have preferences. Argentine ants take sweet baits, while thief and Pharaoh ants prefer protein or greasy baits. Offer small amounts of different types to see which they take.
Keep Them Out
Stop the next invasion
Keep plants and mulch away from your foundation. Penn State says at least 6 inches. Trim branches and shrubs that touch your house, because ants use them as bridges.
How Long Does Ant Bait Take?
UC IPM says you should see fewer ants in about 5 to 10 days. Full control of a colony can take several weeks or more.
Should You Use Bait Indoors?
Experts differ. UC IPM recommends baits mainly outdoors, and indoors only for a serious infestation when you can’t find where the ants are getting in. Penn State treats enclosed indoor bait traps as the main indoor pesticide option. Either way, both advise against indoor sprays.
What to Avoid
- Indoor sprays: UC IPM says they’re usually unnecessary and don’t stop more ants from coming in. Penn State warns about residues.
- Bug bombs and foggers: Penn State advises against them.
- Perimeter sprays: UC IPM says they’re short-lived and can pollute waterways.
When to Call a Professional
If the problem persists, hire a pest control professional trained in integrated pest management. UC IPM suggests asking for baits and spot treatments, not monthly sprays. Carpenter ants need attention, because they hollow out wood to nest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does vinegar kill ants on contact?
It might kill an ant that gets soaked, but the university guidance we read doesn’t recommend it for killing ants. It doesn’t reach the colony, so it won’t solve the problem.
What ratio of vinegar and water should I use?
The sources don’t give one. It’s only being used to wipe away trails, so a simple mix of both is fine.
Why do ants keep coming back?
Usually because food or water is still available, a way in is still open, or the colony is still active.
How long does ant bait take to work?
UC IPM says about 5 to 10 days to see fewer ants, and several weeks or more for full control.
How do I tell ants from termites?
UC IPM says ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae and smaller hind wings. Termites don’t.
