About us

We help people fix things
themselves.

FixMyThings started with one simple idea: most repairs are not as hard as they look, and nobody should have to pay $200 for a $10 fix just because they didn’t know how to do it.

Our story

The first guide on this site was written out of frustration. A washing machine stopped spinning. The repair quote was $180. The actual fix? A $9 carbon brush, a screwdriver, and 25 minutes of work.

That felt wrong. Not just expensive — wrong. The information existed, but it was buried in forum threads, inconsistent YouTube videos, and instructions written for professional technicians. There was no single place that simply said: “Here’s what’s broken, here’s the part, here’s how to fix it.”

So we built that place. FixMyThings now covers hundreds of common problems across home repairs, tech, cars, appliances, and everyday life skills — all written in plain language, for people with no technical background.

What we cover

We write about problems that real people actually face — the kind that send you straight to a search engine at 9pm, hoping to avoid a call-out fee in the morning.

  • Home repairs — plumbing, electrical, walls, floors, doors, windows
  • Tech and devices — phones, laptops, routers, TVs, smart home
  • Cars and vehicles — basic maintenance, battery, tyres, common faults
  • Appliances — washing machines, dryers, fridges, dishwashers, ovens
  • Life skills — practical things that are useful to know and easy to miss
  • Garden and outdoors — gutters, fences, lawns, outdoor taps

Our values

✍️
Plain language, always
We write every guide as if we’re explaining it to a friend who’s never done this before. No jargon, no assumed knowledge, no condescension.
Honest about difficulty
We tell you if something is genuinely easy, genuinely hard, or genuinely better left to a professional. We’d rather lose a page view than send you into a repair you’re not ready for.
🔍
Transparent about money
We earn money through affiliate links and advertising. We’re upfront about this, and it never influences which products we recommend. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
🌍
Built for everyone
We’re read by people in over 180 countries. Our guides avoid regional jargon and recommend parts that are available globally — or explain how to find a local equivalent.

How we make money

Every guide on this site is free to read. We fund the site in three ways:

  • Affiliate commissions: When you click a product link and buy something, we earn a small percentage. This costs you nothing extra.
  • Google AdSense: We display advertising on some pages. Ads are clearly labelled and managed by Google.
  • Premium digital guides: We sell in-depth guides and resources for people who want more detailed help with specific repair projects.

We believe the best way to build a trustworthy site is to be completely open about the business model. If you want to support us for free, just share a guide with someone who needs it.

Want to write for us?

We are always looking for people who genuinely know how to fix things — and can explain it clearly. If you have expertise in any repair area and want to contribute a guide, we’d love to hear from you. Email us at hello@fixmythings.com with a short introduction and the topic you’d like to cover.
